Craigmillar Growers b

Craigmillar Growers is a community gardening project set up by the Community Alliance Trust. We bring together and support groups of volunteers to grow fruit and vegetables for the benefit of the local community.

We are currently growing on three sites, at the White House, Bristo Church and Inch Nursery. We supply fresh seasonal produce for the Green House Pantry and other local community food projects - and volunteers also take a share.

Community Alliance Trust is thrilled to announce the grand launch of its brand-new website communityalliancetrust.com, dedicated to serving the Craigmillar community. Our gardening volunteers have been braving the downpours at the Inch, where everything is growing like crazy (including the weeds). We have started planting in the new polytunnel, hopeful for an abundance of tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and cucumbers this summer. We could really do with more volunteers!!! Especially on Tuesdays at the Inch where there is loads to do.

Gardening Sessions

We hold drop-in gardening sessions which are open to all, no experience or 'green fingers' required. Join us and you will meet new friends, get some fresh air and exercise, learn about gardening and help feed the community. And get your fruit and veg for free!

Gardening sessions are usually on Tuesdays, Thursdays and sometimes Saturdays, 10.30am - 2.30pm, though the timetable changes according to the season and what needs doing in the gardens. Ask to join our mailing list or WhatsApp group for the latest updates.

We also hold Growers, Workshops once a month on Saturdays where we share gardening knowhow.

White House Garden

CAT set up a garden at the White House in 2014, with help from local volunteers, to supply the community cafe with fruit and veg. The garden has raised beds, a polytunnel and a covered work space around the edge of the car park behind the White House.

Since 2018 we have also established a vegetable garden in the grounds of Bristo Memorial Church, just a short walk from the White House. Over the coming years we will identify more sites, small and large, which can be turned over to food growing.

Community Alliance Trust has promoted community gardening in the areas of north-east Edinburgh where we work since 2014, working in partnership with Edible Estates. We helped local residents to set up neighbourhood gardens in Magdalene and Bingham, which are run by volunteer management committees with continuing support from the community gardening team when they need it.

Anyone living in Bingham or Magdalene can join their local neighbourhood garden, rent a raised bed for their own use and help to create a shared community space for all to enjoy. Contact the management committees or the CAT Gardens team for more information.
